Overview

The pharmacotherapy of critically ill patients is complex and the published evidence supporting best medication practices is ever-changing.  Critical care pharmacists, in conjunction with the intensivist-led ICU multidisciplinary team, play a key role in optimizing drug safety and efficacy in this vulnerable population. Under the leadership of Paul Szumita, PharmD, John Marshall, PharmD, and John Devlin, PharmD the first Northeastern University New England Critical Care Pharmacotherapy Symposium was held in Newton, MA in 2004.  This symposium has delivered quality education with most recent updates in the field to thousands of critical care pharmacists and trainees from the New England states for more than 2 decades. 

Since 2024, the program committee expanded their target audience to physicians and other health care professionals, providing education that is interprofessional, enhancing knowledge and promoting team collaboration. This longstanding program, now co-chaired by Paul Szumita, PharmD, Russ Roberts, PharmD, Jeremy Degrado, PharmD John Devlin, PharmD, and Gerald Weinhouse, MD continues to engage attendees in innovative pharmacotherapy topics most pertinent to their practice. In addition to nationally recognized faculty, highlight of each year’s program are the clinical pearls delivered by PGY-2 critical care and ED residents from New England Hospitals.
